What each option actually involves
X96 express bus (€6)
Direct airport-to-Piraeus express. Runs 24/7 every 25–35 minutes. The trip is comfortable enough but takes 90–110 minutes depending on traffic, and drops you at the central port square — from there it's a 5–20 minute walk to your specific ferry gate. Luggage rack on the bus is small; large suitcases sit awkwardly. Best for solo backpackers.
Metro line 3 → line 1 (€9)
Metro M3 (blue line) from the airport to Monastiraki (~40 min, runs every 30 min), change to M1 (green line) to Piraeus (~25 min). Total 75 min plus the change, plus a 10-minute walk at Piraeus to most gates. Cheaper than a taxi but the transfer-with-luggage at Monastiraki is genuinely unpleasant.
Metered taxi (€60–€85)
Queue at the airport taxi rank. The €40 flat fare does NOT apply — Piraeus is outside the Athens municipal boundary, so meter rates kick in. Typical fare is €60–€85 depending on traffic. The driver may or may not know your specific ferry gate; verify before setting off.
Private transfer (€55–€95)
Driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, walks you to the vehicle, drives the Attiki Odos motorway directly to Piraeus (45–55 min), and drops at the actual ferry gate matching your boarding ticket (drivers know which lines use which gates). Cheaper than the metered taxi for the same service, with predictable pricing.
Why ferry-day timing makes this comparison different
If you have 6+ hours between landing and ferry departure, any of these options work. The trade-offs only really matter when you have 2–4 hours, which is the typical window for travellers booking a same-day fly-and-sail combo.
At 2.5 hours: bus and metro are risky (delays add up); taxi or transfer is safe.
At 1.5 hours: only the private transfer is realistic — and frankly, even that's tight. The minimum safe buffer between scheduled landing and ferry boarding closure is 90 minutes.
